ABSTRACT FIGURATIVE DIGITAL ARTWORK
ARTIST STATEMENT
Edward Patrick Mooney’s digital paintings unfold like visual jazz — a symphony of rhythm, breath, and intuition. Each gesture is an act of improvisation, where color and line move in spontaneous harmony, evoking both melody and meditation. The artist’s figures rise and dissolve within these shifting compositions, suggesting a continuum of motion rather than fixed form. His work celebrates imperfection and flow — a lyrical affirmation that to move is to exist, and to create is to pray through rhythm. These fluid forms echo melodies of motion, embodying spirit, tempo, and transcendence. The works typically emphasize elongated, rhythmic figures and flowing lines, both musical and meditative, with a sense of breath and spiritual tempo. These fluid abstractions trace rhythm, breath, and becoming. Available as digital downloads or special exclusive limited edition signed prints.
About The Work
Edward Patrick Mooney's palette feels harmonious, airy, and sophisticated. Balancing soft neutrals with bold accents, often in matte tones, gives the compositions a refined, modern feel. The colors evoke a sense of motion and calm energy, almost musical in flow.
Major throughlines in his work include deep cobalt and cerulean to turquoise and seafoam green, serving as grounding or connective hues, providing balance and emotional coolness. Warmer earth tones bring warmth and human touch, contrasting the blues’ calmness. Neutral spaces create breathing room within these dynamic compositions. All of this defined by strong black outlines and floating white highlights unify these pieces stylistically, with the lines acting like musical notations — expressive, fluid, and essential to the collective works' rhythm.
Lines, colors, spaces, and interconnection achieve a unique emotional harmony - serene yet playful, elegant without rigidity. A surface simplicity reveals a deeper visual choregraphy that evokes air, music, and movement. This expanding body of work is timeless and contemporary at once, leaning toward mid-century abstraction in spirit but with distinctly digital of-the-moment clarity. Additional Information and Biography I am a Northern California artist, musician, and producer. I developed my artistic line and style in the early 1980s, working in acrylics on canvas, mixed media, and also public performance art pieces. For many decades my creative energy has focused on writing, performing and recording. I co-founded THE RUB, a Los Angeles post-punk band that recorded two critically acclaimed albums on the Happy Squid Records underground record label (www.TheRubLA.com). I also wrote and recorded twenty-five songs for a Northern singer-songwriter band (www.StreetsOfRome.com). I have recently returned to visual arts, through digital art. I am drawn to the immediacy and spontaneity of this platform, which also allows me to imbue musicality to these artworks. A paradox of modern life – impersonal technology can actually enable very personal expression. Some see pictographs, characters from an unknown language, and blueprints for a stained glass installation in my work. Some see a choreography dancing souls mid-journey. My works are described as airy, abstract yet deeply human. Expressive, visual music that evokes movement and transformation. My aesthetic is most accurately described as abstract figurative, expressing an essence of life in a form expressed as simple line, shape, space. Space always calls out to be filled, in my case with a palette that can be understated, vibrant, or dramatic depending on the work. But as in my earlier paintings, I embrace a certain amount of incompleteness. None of us is ever complete, why should we be when the universe itself isn’t? The foundation of my work is line. My lines are interconnected. Lines depict waves, lines define edges. But quantum physics and our own emotions defy separation. Perhaps not apparent, but vital to my work is a grounding of abstract in nature - the interconnection of branches in trees growing together, intertwined roots beneath the ground from plants inches apart and hundreds of feet apart, the intersection of lives that is a family tree, which extend past the page or the canvas to connect everyone that has, does or will exist. In my work amidst this interconnectedness, individuals emerge. They exist, they express. They stand in the moment, but will move in the next, outside of time. I have had a professional career in corporate finance and investment banking and co-founded a non-profit that provides personal empowerment programs around the world. Experiences from many parts of the world as professional or personal travel find their way into my digital art with visual references from Africa, Australia, Latin America and Europe.
